The chase began way back. It was a plan that slowly took shape and which bore fruit at Brno with a remarkable one-two that sent clear signals of intent to leaders Sundberg and Goldstein. The message that Zumerle sent was that he was a title contender. At Valencia, in the penultimate round of the season, the Veronese driver's almost risk-free tactics again paid off. Zumerle knew that he couldn't beat Sundberg in a straight fight in qualifying or in the race proper and so pinned his hopes on Race 2 but stuck to the Swede in the first race. This strategy means that he comes away from the Ricardo Tormo circuit with a three point lead. Zumerle is now the man to beat at Mugello. It goes without saying that Sundberg and Goldstein will have a say in things in a final round that promises to be a rollercoaster ride of excitement and emotion.
