The pre-race expectations came to pass. Everyone expected Goldstein/Sundberg to try to leave Zolder with the championship lead. They did what they set out to do without taking any big risks, with Goldstein consistent and Sundberg showing his speed. The Columbian-Swedish pairing now enjoy a 15 point lead over Sergio Rota, who was missing from this round. Francesco Maggi did not have an easy start at Zolder and limited the damage to sit 17 points off top spot.
Zolder was as exciting as Monza. In Race 2, just half a second separated a superb Nicki Pastorelli from a bubbly Peter Sundberg. The rain didn’t show even though the clouds threatened all day, but Emanuele Smurra, the first Trofeo winner, did. Brands Hatch is next up on the calendar and will give us an insight into whether Smurra, together with his partner Piancastelli, can trouble the leaders.
