The Maserati leading contender in the United Arab Emirates
With just one race to go in the UAE GT Championship (scheduled for next 26 March at Abu Dhabi) Irish driver Robert Cregan is in second place with 38 points, thanks to three wins and one second place. The Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo driver held the leadership in the standing until the last race, in which he did not compete because of a concurrent event in Australia.
In this part of the world - which is becoming increasingly important to Maserati in commercial terms - Maserati's interest and dedication in the racing sector is in continual growth, with excellent results in the GT Championship in the Emirates. The program, backed-up by the local importers and Maserati's Middle Eastern branch, is lending further distinction to Maserati's trophy cabinet.
The GT Championship of the United Arab Emirates is contested exclusively on the Dubai and Abu Dhabi circuits, which have already hosted the Maserati MC12s in an FIA GT1 Championship round.
The season began last October 23 and comprises eight races (each an hour in duration) reserved to GT cars divided into classes according to weight and power. A second GranTurismo MC Trofeo has appeared on the starting grid of these ultramodern circuits, driven by David Field, who occupies sixth place in the ranking.
As it happens on Trofeo Maserati racing weekends, Maserati organises exclusive activities for its customers over the weekend of the competition, to keep up with events on the track and promote the brand. In light of the numerous requests received from these customers, Maserati has not ruled out the possibility of an increase in the number of GranTurismo MCs on the track in the 2011-2012 season.
Competition is the history of Maserati and the sporting programs are constantly evolving; the second edition of the Trofeo Maserati GranTurismo MC will begin next 1 May, comprising eight race events. The dates on the calendar - after a series of tests scheduled for 26 and 27 March at Imola - includes the opening race on the same circuit on May 1 (coinciding with the GT Open), then May 15 at Monza (Italy, WTCC), June 5 (to be decided), June 26 Spa (Belgium, GT Open), July 17 Donington (UK, WTCC), September 4 Valencia (Spain, WTCC), September 18 Vallelunga, (Italy, Italian GT) with the grande finale, as last year, at Mugello on October 2 (Italy, Italian GT).
